Should my puppy lose any teeth?

My puppy that is 5 mo old has lost a tooth while we were playing with a pull toy. Should she lose any teath at such a young age? It dosent seem to bother her at all. She is a miniature Doxson.

Reply:4-6 months is the age that puppies start to loose their puppy teeth. They will be replaced with larger, duller adult teeth. It is perfectly normal. You may want to get a towel wet and freeze it and let her chew on it, as it soothes the pain of teething.

Pull toys, chew toys and similar things are great for teething puppies. Also, ice is good to relive some of the pain. You can take an old towel and soak it in water and freeze it for her to chew on. That will provide the numbing of the ice, but she can still chew as much as she needs to.

If you aren't going to breed her this is a good time to get her spayed before she even starts her heat.

Even though most dogs start loosing their teeth at 6 months, I've seen some that began teething at 4 months and a half.





Since her gums may start aching I would recommend you to buy her some chew toys. They should be of rubber, so that she can bite safely into them.





I recommend you to buy her 1 as soon as you can, because some dogs, not having chew toys will start chewing into almost anything they can find during teething. Afterwards, their owners had a lot of trouble to take them off this habit.





Don't worry, just make sure that she bites into her toys and not into anything you don't want her to.

All young animals lose their deciduous (baby) teeth, and at 5 months, your puppy should have lost several of her baby teeth as the permanent ones come in. You may or may not see the teeth as they come out, sometimes they swallow them, which is no problem, or they may lose them outside. If, by the time you get the puppy spayed (which I HOPE you'll do before her 1st heat at 6-8 months), have the vet check for any retained baby teeth, mainly Canines ( the 4 big incisors on front) - if they are still present and the permanent ones are in, then you'll want to get them extracted at the same time, this will stop any mal-occlusion and unnecessary wear and crowding of the other teeth.

get a raw hide and start teaching good things to chew and bad things to chew
