My Golden Retriever is 8, and Is Losing A Tooth...Does Anyone Know Why?

I just noticed yesterday that one of my dog's teeth was coming out, its angle completely out of wack with the rest of his mouth.

I'm wondering what the possible causes of this are. I haven't touched it, so I'm not sure if it is loose or not.

He might have injured himself, but it could be related to age and dental health. Even if his teeth look good, he could have tartar under the gumline and develop periodontal disease. That can lead to heart problems, so it's not simply cosmetic. I would schedule an appointment with the vet, either way.
Reply:Even a Golden or any dog can have tooth decay or gum disease.

You best make an appointment with your vet and have your Golden boy's mouth checked out. Tooth loss is not a good thing for any dog and 8 years old is still a young senior dog.

Your vet will best be able to tell you whats going on with your Golden.

Good Luck with your golden boy!

Note: once the baby teeth fall out and the adult teeth come in the adult teeth are for the life of he dog. So if your dog has a few teeth that fall out in adulthood it is not normal.
Reply:Well, dogs lose teeth just like humans do....that's what my veterinarian says, in fact, my dog has lost some teeth that we found on the floor, and the vet says that it's perfectly natural. It may be just with my dog though....
Reply:Perhaps if your had been taking your dog on regular trips to the vet, then either this wouldn't be happening, or you could have asked him about why it is happening.
Reply:My Golden boy's two front teeth were very loose when he was 9 y.o. This was caused by gnawing on a marrow bone. The Vet extracted them for fear of any infection setting in. He is absolutely fine , in fact you would never know they weren't there any more.

I noticed that my 8 y.o. female's front teeth are looking slightly crooked now and she used to have a wonderful 'bite', as did the male. I guess it's old age creeping in. Happens to the best of us!
Reply:make an appointment with your vet as your dog my have some sort of mouth disease
