Why do rednecks lose their teeth before they're 30?

When I lived in California, the only people who were missing teeth were meth addicts or homeless. But since I moved to Tennessee, I noticed that a lot of people just let their teeth rot out of their heads. They seem fairly normal, but I can't wrap my mind around why they would neglect ordinary dental hygiene long enough for that to happen.

Maybe this is some southern thing that I'll never understand, like nascar and biscuits and gravy (ugh. bland, fat-sauce with bits of sausage.) Can someone help me understand this?

Why do rednecks lose their teeth before they're 30?
I grew up in a very rural area of Michigan. It would certainly be called a "redneck" town by some of the more "enlightened" people. As a kid, I didn't go to the dentist, ever. I guess preventative maintenance for teeth wasn't that high up on my parent's budget and, comparatively speaking, we weren't that bad off. I've spent over 20k on my teeth over the last ten years in a desperate, and thankfully successful attempt at keeping them. I can afford it. There are a lot of folks who can't. They lose their teeth. Those more privileged can then make fun of them while smugly proclaiming their liberal values and how much they care about those less fortunate than themselves.

It's a lot more about socioeconomics than it is about neglect.
Reply:has to do with the fact they don't brush and have a high sugar intake
Reply:hahahaha looks like u need to go back to cali, lol i live in Georgia and honestly we look on the inside and we r not really materialistic.
Reply:Racist language is bad for your teeth?
Reply:smoking dosent help matters
Reply:Because George Bush's bowel movements have a high acid content....I hear a lot of those southerners are changing their diet though
Reply:Lol. Okay, first off, I'm from TN and I'd just like to say I have all my teeth (and they are beautiful)!

Also, I lived in San Diego for two years after high school.

So. You want an answer! Poverty. If you go outside the cities, you will find country-minded "folk" who, for whatever reason, don't have the funds to afford proper dental care. The majority of them are farmers, who have enough land to support there family and crops, but with the rising cost of healthcare, they are unable to insure themselves.

Also, "back in the day", dental care was not considered a priority.

It is much cheaper to have a tooth pulled than have a crown put in.

Biscuits and gravy are AWESOME btw! It's the texture we love. :)

And nascar...well....I've always been stumped on that one.

But why do so many Californians alter their bodies? It's so hard on your systems....
Reply:biscuits and gravy is great. guess you have to be from the south to enjoy it.
