I am a dental assistant. If your son has cavities it's very important for him to get them filled. Even though he is going to loose those teeth you do not want the problem becoming worse. Primary (baby) teeth are very important because they hold the space where the permanent (adult) are to come in. So if the problem gets worse and he ends up need ing to have to tooth pulled what happens is the teeth start to drift. What this means is that the other teeth start moving to fill in the space that the other tooth was in so when the adult teeth start coming in they can grow in crooked because the space that it needed to come in is not there anymore. Hope this helps.
Reply:Do it.

My oldest dd has had fillings done on primary/baby teeth. The problem with not doing it is the cavaties will get bigger and can lead to worse problems.

My oldest had a watch put on one tooth and needed one filled. We had to wait over a month to get in. It was filled, but he didn't check the other tooth. I took her to a different dentist because she was in pain. He filled the tooth that had the watch on it from the other dentist. It ended up being a very deep cavity. She nearly needed a pulpotomy/baby root canal.

Until the second dentist took care of all of her problems, she was fighting bad breath from her teeth rotting.

My 8 yr. old just had a molar pulled (baby), because the tooth would just continue to decay, down to the roots, and eventually spread to the permanent tooth. Now she has a big gap where that tooth was, and we have to watch it carefully, because the adjacent teeth may "crowd" the open spot, causing all sorts of problems when the permanent teeth erupt in a few years.

Let me add that she had fillings done in other teeth, but the one she had pulled was so rotted, there was no hope. And her breath is so much fresher now!

Have them filled, and be diligent in teeth brushing, flossing and rinsing with a flouride rinse.
