How can I stop clinching my teeth?

Ever since I had a root canal (year ago), I've been clinching my teeth (especially during my sleep). I have read the consequences of this, and I don't want to lose my teeth. But I am not conscious of this until I notice that I biting down hard on my teeth. I wake up sometimes with my jaw hurting. I am a poor college student, so I can't afford to go to the dentist (that root canal a year ago took a big chuck out of my school loan and I am broke). Need advice. What can I do?

How can I stop clinching my teeth?
'Bruxism' is the word for it. Variety of reasons for this including worms in your stomach ! Most often a high point on your too may cause an imbalance in your bite, and therefore subconsciously you must be grinding it down. is your crown after rootcanal, 'longer' than before causing a 'high' bite? Needs to be filed down, if it is.

Tension and stress can cause grinding your teeth too. If your facial muscles are tensed up, internal stress.? Try meditation, relaxation methods. Warm fomentation on your tired, muscles %26amp; ususal general prescriptions for sleeping soundly at night. ( No smoking, coffee etc)

If it persists, then your dentist can make you rubber guards, which you can place between your teeth to avoid contact of upper and lower teeth. The kind boxers wear, sometimes available at drug / sports shops (mouth guard)
Reply:you can buy a mouth guard from dentist. Its only purpose is so you dont destroy your teeth enamel. It feels weird, its expensive, and does not help to stop the grinding.
Reply:I was on some meds that made me clench my teeth during my sleep, they gave me a mouth guard. They form it according to your teeth, I believe the dentist does this.
Reply:Eliminate stressful situations in your life.
Reply:Until finances are better.....

buy the mouth guards at a discount store (you heat and mold them to your mouth)

use moist heat.... 10 minutes on / 10 minutes off

take 400 mg of ibuprofen for inflammation

Don't neglect your teeth, go for regular check ups
